VisualFizz’s roots were founded in the world of digital contracting and freelancing. So when VisualFizz was presented with the opportunity to help host an Upwork Huddle, we jumped at the chance to network and meet with others who decided to take on the role of Freelancepreneur. We were extra excited to connect with other freelancers in our hometown and share our experiences on what it means to be a Chicagoan as well as a freelancer.
We know that there are many reasons to take the “alternative” path of self-employment and online freelancing. Some Upwork-ers had just made the decision to create a freelancer profile that week, others had been at it for years. Some were using the platform to pursue their personal passions and branch out in their careers, others were supplementing their current income by ‘moonlighting’ and taking on additional projects outside of their 9-5 jobs. Some members even built entire businesses only using resources from Upwork.
The Upwork Huddle was held at MakeOffices at MagMile and was Co-Hosted by Jim Clement over at Millennial Web Development. Over 25 freelancers from 10 different industries joined us for the Huddle. Over light refreshments, we discussed our current projects, passions, business needs, and experiences as they related to our various industries. With such a diverse crowd, sharing stories and making meaningful conversation was easy!
VisualFizz was inspired by the support for the sense of community that is often lacking in a freelancer’s professional life. If you’re self-employed or supplement your income with extra work, chances are you all too often find yourself buried in your work and prioritizing your freelancing over networking and making meaningful connections in your industry. Freelancers also often miss out on on-the-job learning and professional development opportunities that those who work traditional jobs are given. Lastly, freelancers can diversify their service offerings and take on bigger, higher dollar clients if they are able to call on their network and make efficient partnerships.
VisualFizz and Millennial Web Development were excited to host the Upwork Huddle in Chicago and connect with Chicago-based freelancers and entrepreneurs! If you joined us for the first Huddle in Chicago or would be interested in connecting with the group, please visit and request to join the Facebook Group we created: https://www.facebook.com/groups/129915097732464/.
A note from Upwork:
“What is an Upwork Huddle and in which cities/countries are they taking place?
An Upwork Huddle is a meetup independently organized and hosted by Top Rated freelancers for the local Upwork freelancer community, and not an official Upwork event.* It’s a great opportunity to socialize, extend your network, share stories about the freelancing lifestyle and have fun together with other freelancers who use Upwork’s website. The program is currently available in 35+ cities globally where we see strong interest with an opportunity to expand to additional cities in the future.”
